What To Know About Wisdom Tooth Removal

WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH?

Known as the third molars, wisdom teeth develop later in life and typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people aren’t bothered by their wisdom teeth, others can actually feel a strong sense of discomfort as a result of them breaking through the gum line. Many patients will need a tooth extraction in their late teens or early 20’s for the removal of their wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to emerge. They often need to be removed because they are compacted or will cause overcrowding of the existing teeth if allowed to fully emerge.

Wisdom teeth removal is a standard surgical procedure that can be done from the comfort of our Knoxville, TN periodontist office.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Tooth extractions are a routine procedure and patients are often surprised at how comfortable they can be. Dr. Cain may use a local anesthetic or topical numbing cream to ensure that you feel as little discomfort as possible.

The tooth needing extraction will be prepped and then loosed and removed by the root from the jaw. Dr. Cain will gently wiggle the tooth back and forth until it is released.

WHAT ARE MY SEDATION OPTIONS?

Dr. Cain provides multiple sedation options for a patient’s optimal comfort. For patients who experience fear of the dentist, sedation dentistry can help them overcome their fears so they may receive the dental care they need. Dr. Cain offers oral sedation, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation. During your consultation, you and Dr. Cain will discuss which sedation option is best suited for your procedure and personal comfort.
