Restorative Dental FAQs in Knoxville, TN

Read the answers to common questions that many patients have about restorative dental care:

How can I treat teeth clenching and grinding?

If you notice that you clench and grind your teeth under stress, call Dr. Cain for a bite analysis. He uses a T-Scan, a device that takes a map of the bite and points out areas where the bite is unbalanced. Dr. Cain will often recommend a nightguard, bite alignment therapy, or cosmetic care for patients with TMJ disorders. Once patients have stopped clenching and grinding their teeth, they can repair their smile with porcelain veneers, tooth bonding, or dental crowns.

Do I have gum disease if I have bleeding gums?

Do your gums bleed when you brush and floss? There could be multiple causes. If you brush too aggressively, you can wear down your tooth enamel and cause gingival bleeding. Alternatively, you could have gingivitis or gum inflammation. Gum inflammation is one of the earliest signs of periodontitis or gum disease.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are a permanent restoration. During the healing process, the titanium implant posts fuse with the jaw bone tissue. Once the implants are healed, they are a permanent part of the mouth. To make sure that your dental implants last, avoid smoking and tobacco products. Nicotine restricts blood flow and can easily cause implant failure. In addition, please continue to brush and floss twice a day. You may also schedule routine dental appointments in our office so we can keep track of the health of your implants, bridges, or dentures.

Can I receive implants if I have a removable restoration?

Yes, if you have a removable bridge or denture but want the stability of implants, we can help. We can help schedule your implant surgery and ensure that you are in good oral health for your treatment. If needed, we will recommend bone grafting or periodontal therapy so that you are in the best health possible.

Do dental crowns look like natural teeth?

Yes, we provide tooth crowns that are customized to look and feel like natural teeth. Our crowns are made of porcelain ceramic materials, which reflect light and provide strength to weakened and damaged teeth.
