Let’s walk through it. Knowing what to expect takes the mystery out of the process. And honestly, it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.
The Conversation First
Every good evaluation starts with a conversation. We’ll sit down with you in a quiet space and talk about what’s been going on. Then we’ll ask about any symptoms you’ve noticed, like bleeding, pain, or sensitivity. We’ll want to know about your medical history, medications you’re taking, and any habits like smoking that could affect your gum health.
This is also your chance to ask questions. Nothing’s off the table. If you’re nervous or confused about something, just say so. We’re here to help, not to judge.
The Oral Exam
Next comes the physical exam. Dr. Robert Cain will look at your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. He’ll check for redness, swelling, and any signs of inflammation. He’ll also look at how your gums fit around each tooth.
This part is quick and painless. We’re just gathering visual information at this stage.
The Probing: What It Is and Why It Matters
Now we get to the part most patients find fascinating. We use a small instrument called a periodontal probe. It’s basically a tiny ruler with markings on it. We gently slide it between your gum and tooth to measure the depth of the space, what we call the periodontal pocket.
Healthy pockets are usually 1 to 3 millimeters deep. Anything over 4 millimeters is a sign that something’s going on. The deeper the pocket, the more bacteria can hide and cause damage. It takes just a few seconds per tooth, and you’ll hear us calling out numbers as we go.
Some patients feel a little sensitivity during probing. That’s normal. If it’s uncomfortable, just let us know. We can adjust our technique.
X-Rays and Imaging
After the probing, we’ll take some X-rays. Standard bitewings show us the bone between your teeth. But for a full periodontal evaluation, we often recommend a panoramic X-ray or even a cone beam CT scan. These give us a complete picture of your jawbone and sinuses.
Here’s what we’re looking for: bone loss. Gum disease damages the bone that supports your teeth. X-rays let us see exactly where that damage is and how severe it is. This information is crucial for planning any treatment.
Putting It All Together
Once we’ve gathered all this information, we sit down with you again. We’ll show you what we found, explain what it means, and talk about your options. Sometimes the news is good. Maybe you’ve got mild gingivitis that just needs a good professional cleaning and some home care tweaks.
Other times, we find more advanced disease that requires scaling and root planing, laser therapy, or even surgery. Whatever the case, we walk you through it step by step. No jargon. No pressure. Just honest, clear information so you can make the right decision for yourself.
