When most people hear the word “frenectomy,” they picture a baby who can’t breastfeed. And yes, that’s a common reason for the procedure. But here’s something plenty of adults don’t realize: that same small band of tissue could be causing problems for you right now, and you might not even know it. And a frenectomy for adults could help improve both your oral health and your quality of life.
A frenum is a small piece of connective tissue that connects two structures in your mouth. You’ve got one under your tongue (the lingual frenum) and one connecting your upper lip to your gums (the labial frenum). When these tissues are too tight, too thick, or attached in the wrong spot, they can cause real issues that follow you straight into adulthood.

Signs You Might Need a Frenectomy as an Adult
Let’s start with the tongue-tie. In adults, a restricted lingual frenum can show up in surprising ways. Maybe you’ve always had trouble sticking out your tongue past your lower teeth. Maybe you can’t touch the roof of your mouth with the tip of your tongue. You might snore loudly or deal with sleep apnea. Some adults even develop jaw pain or chronic neck tension from unconsciously compensating for limited tongue movement.
The upper lip frenum’s a different story. When this tissue attaches too low on the gum line, it can create a gap between your front teeth. Lots of folks assume that gap’s just how their teeth grew in. But in some cases, the frenum’s literally pulling the teeth apart. That same tight frenum can also keep gum tissue from attaching properly, leaving a persistent gap that collects food and bacteria.
How a Frenectomy Helps
A frenectomy is a straightforward procedure that removes or reshapes the problematic tissue. At East Tennessee Periodontics, we use dental lasers for most frenectomies. The laser is precise. It seals blood vessels as it works, so there’s very little bleeding. And it sterilizes the area at the same time, which lowers the risk of infection.
The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. We numb the area completely, so you won’t feel a thing. You might smell a faint odor similar to burning hair, but that’s normal and passes quickly. Most patients are in and out of our Knoxville office in under an hour.
Recovery is Simpler Than You Think
One of the best things about laser frenectomy is how easy recovery tends to be. You’ll have some mild soreness for a day or two, sort of like biting your cheek or burning your tongue on hot coffee. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually handle it just fine.
We’ll give you a set of simple stretching exercises to do at home. These stretches keep the tissue from reattaching as it heals. They take about two minutes total and aren’t painful. Within a week or two, you should be fully healed and wondering why you didn’t do this sooner.
The Benefits Go Beyond Your Mouth
Patients who get a frenectomy as adults often notice changes they didn’t expect:
- Speech gets clearer.
- Breathing feels easier during sleep.
- Neck and shoulder tension that’s been around for years just fades away.
- For patients with the lip tie, the gap between their front teeth may start closing on its own.
One patient told us she didn’t realize how much effort she was putting into talking until after her tongue-tie was released. She described it as finally taking a deep breath after years of shallow breathing.
It’s Never Too Late
Just because you’ve lived with a tight frenum your whole life doesn’t mean you have to keep living with it. A frenectomy is quick, safe, and covered by most dental insurance plans when there’s a functional need.
